Infidelity Examinations: What You Should Know

Suspicions of infidelity can place a heavy burden on any relationship. When trust is questioned, emotions run high, and it can be difficult to separate fact from assumption. For many couples, the uncertainty becomes overwhelming, leading them to seek clear answers.

A polygraph examination can help provide that clarity. While it cannot repair trust on its own, it can be a valuable tool for addressing doubts directly. At ORTSEC, our examiners have conducted hundreds of infidelity-related polygraph examinations, helping individuals and couples get to the truth so they can make informed decisions about their future.

In this blog, we’ll explain what an infidelity examination is, how it works, and what to consider if you’re thinking about scheduling one.

What Is an Infidelity Examination?

An infidelity examination is a polygraph test designed to address allegations of cheating or sexual contact outside of a committed relationship. These exams are customized to address the concerns of the individuals involved.

Common questions include:

  • Has the examinee engaged in sexual contact with another person?
  • Has the examinee kissed, met, or been intimate with someone outside the relationship?
  • Has the examinee communicated or met secretly with another romantic partner?

The exact scope of questions is determined by the circumstances and the issues that need clarification.

How the Process Works

Consultation – At ORTSEC, the assigned examiner conducts a private consultation over the telephone days before the scheduled examination. During this call, the examiner listens to the client’s concerns, explains the process, and schedules the appointment.

Pre-Test Phase / Interview – On the day of the exam, the examiner meets the examinee and escorts them to the polygraph suite. The following takes place before any sensors are applied:

  • The examiner explains the process and advises that the interview is recorded for quality control and safety.
  • Consent and liability forms are signed.
  • Health questions are asked to ensure the examinee is suitable for testing.
  • The examiner explains how the polygraph works and conducts a brief practice test.
  • A thorough interview is conducted to address the client’s concerns.
  • The examinee is given the opportunity to respond to questions and provide explanations for their answers.
  • Each test question is reviewed and confirmed before the data collection phase.

Data Collection Phase (in the polygraph chair) – Polygraph sensors are placed on the examinee. The examiner asks the previously reviewed questions while recording physiological responses. Each question is asked several times, in varying order, to ensure sufficient data is collected.

Post-Test Phase – Once the test is complete, the examiner analyzes the data and explains the results. Any inconsistencies are discussed openly and clearly, giving the client a thorough understanding of the findings.

At ORTSEC, results are always delivered in a direct and professional manner so clients can move forward with confidence.

What an Infidelity Examination Can and Cannot Do

A polygraph can:

  • Provide evidence-supported answers to specific questions.
  • Reduce uncertainty and bring clarity to a difficult situation.
  • Support couples in making informed decisions about their future.

A polygraph cannot:

  • Heal the emotional impact of betrayal.
  • Replace open communication or counseling.
  • Serve as admissible evidence in most courts.

Preparing for the Exam

To ensure the most accurate results, here are some guidelines:

  • Do not rely on advice from others who have taken a polygraph.
  • Do not overthink or search online for potential test questions.
  • Avoid misinformation from anti-polygraph websites.
  • Do not try to anticipate or guess what will be asked.
  • Get a good night’s rest before your exam.
  • Maintain your normal routine (drink coffee, eat breakfast, etc.).
  • Understand that nervousness is completely normal and does not affect results.

During Your Exam

At the start of the interview, your examiner will remind you to:

  • Follow instructions – This helps collect the best physiological data possible.
  • Ask questions – Never sit in the chair with doubts about the process or the questions. The examiner will answer anything you need clarified.
  • Be completely honest – Examiners are not there to judge. They are professionals who have heard it all and are focused solely on helping you find answers.
